乔家大院又名乔“在中堂”宅院．是清代全国著名的晋商大贾乔致庸的宅第。它组建于清乾隆、嘉庆年间，以后曾有两次增修，一次扩建．于民国初年屡建成规存规模。该院为全封闭的城堡式建筑群，占地10642．4平方米(约十六亩地)建筑面积4175平方米，分6个大院、20个小院、313间房屋，设计精巧，俯视平面呈“喜喜”字形，外观气势宏伟，内视富丽堂皇。

      1985年，祁县政府利用这所宅院筹建民俗博物馆．1986年11月1日对外开放．陈列内容以反映清末民初山西中部地区的民间习俗为主，分衣食住行、岁时节今、人生礼仪、农商习俗、乔家史料、珍宝等专题，陈列手法丰富多彩、雅俗共赏；陈列手法纯朴自然，风格独特，堪称为我国不可多得的民俗文化研究园地。

    The famous Qiao’s family courtyard was first built in the reign of Emperor Qianlong，JiaQing of the Qing Dynasty．It was the dwelling place of Qiao Zhi Yong，a famous businessman in the Qing Dynasty．It is an enclosed castle－like achitectural complex covering an area of 10，642．4 square meters which has been rebuilt twice and extended once．Its buldng area is 4，175 squaremeters which consists of 313 rooms，6 largecourtyards and 20 small courtyards．In bird's eye view it looks like the Chinese character 喜喜 which means double－happiness，the whole architectural building finely designed．It appears splendid outside and magnificent inside．

    The Qiaos family courtyard has been used as a folklore museum since 1986．It displays the family's business history．the basic necessities for living，marilage and funeral arrangement，agriculture and trade custom．It shows you the real life of the people in the central part ofShanxi province in the late Qing Dynasty．
